Wienfluss gate, Vienna

The Wienfluss gate in Stadtpark (City Park) was built due to the regulation works on Wienfluss. It represents one of the greatest Art Nouveau masterpieces in Europe. The initial project was designed by architect Rudolph Krieghammer. After his death in 1898 the City of Vienna assigned Friedrich Ohmann to continue with the project. In the second half of 1900 the architect Josef Hackhofer started working with Ohmann on this project. The construction works were fulfilled 1903 -1906. Due to the costs the City of Vienna cancelled the planned artistic design: elephant spitting water and veil - waterfall above the end stone of the gate. These artistic designs were later never implemented due to historical correctness. The building costs were 556,000 Austrian Crowns, the restoration cost around 4.6 Million Euro.
